The following solution is from Mrs. Hersh's 8th grade FOCUS - Problem Solving Class at Crabapple Middle School, Roswell, Georgia:

The symbol (we called in the "target" symbol) represented the addition of the numbers then dividing that solution by 2. For order of operations, do the items in parenthesis first (as usual).

 

So, 3 (target symbol) 7 = 5

was 3 plus 7 divided by 2 = 5

(4 target symbol 6) target symbol 7 = 6

was 4 plus 6 = 10 divided by 2 = 5 then 5 plus 7 = 12 divided by 2 = 6
